Apprentices Are The Lifeblood Of The Construction Industry
Apprenticeships play a vital role in the trades by combining hands-on experience with classroom learning to develop highly skilled, job-ready workers. They offer individuals the opportunity to earn while they learn, gaining practical knowledge directly from experienced professionals while building a strong foundation in their chosen trade.
For employers, apprenticeships help ensure a steady pipeline of qualified workers who understand the standards and expectations of the industry. Beyond filling labour gaps, apprenticeships strengthen communities by promoting long-term careers, supporting local economies, and preserving the craftsmanship and expertise that keep the trades thriving for generations to come.
What Are The Steps To Becoming An Apprentice?
Find an employer willing to provide the necessary on-the-job training and supervision. Programs are available through Saskatchewan Polytechnic, colleges or ready-to-work programs.
Submit an apprenticeship application with the employer through MyATC.
Submit your hours of work – trade time – through MyATC every few months.
Self-register for technical training in MyATC when you’ve met the required number of hours for your trade.
Education Busaries
The Education Bursary Program provides tuition refunds to apprentices for their apprenticeship training in the designated trades.
Scholarships
MERIT provides two scholarships to outstanding apprentices and presents these awards at the annual Saskatchewan Apprenticeship Commission gala.
Training
While apprenticeship training is important, it is equally critical to expand the skills of your apprentices with additional training in areas such as managing people. Our training programs get top reviews for their content and instructors.
Awards
We love a good celebration, especially when it means we get to recognize the achievements of the people building our province. The annual MERIT Awards of Excellent showcase the skill, dedication and compassion of our members’ employees and rewards them with the formal recognition they so richly deserve.
