Description

This comprehensive course is designed to equip construction supervisors with the knowledge and practical tools required to meet their legal and leadership responsibilities under Canadian workplace safety laws. Participants will learn about the legal framework governing due diligence, the history and impact of key legislation (including Bill C45), and the critical roles and accountabilities of supervisors in maintaining safe and compliant workplaces. The course uses real examples and simple tools to help you understand safety rules and confidently manage your team’s safety on the job.

Learning Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define “due diligence” and understand its significance for supervisors under Canadian law.​​

  • Identify and apply key duties and responsibilities under OHS regulations and the Criminal Code.​

  • Demonstrate effective oversight of daily operations to minimize risks to people, equipment, materials, and the environment.​

  • Employ practical tools (such as hazard assessments and inspection checklists) for proactive risk management.​

  • Distinguish between regulatory and criminal liability, and recognize circumstances that may lead to penalties or prosecution.​

  • Understand leadership competencies for supervisory decision-making, communication, and accountability.​

  • Implement operational systems (ISMEC: Identification, Standards, Measurement, Evaluation, Correction) for workplace safety.​

  • Recognize the rights of workers and supervisors, including the right to refuse unsafe work and protections against discriminatory action.

Technical Requirements

  1. Computer or laptop
    • This course will involve on-screen interaction with your instructor and classmates, reading/viewing on-screen content (slides or videos), and interacting via typing with questions or responses. For this reason, cell phones may not be adequate. 
    • Windows 10 or Mac iOS. 
  2. Webcam (Mandatory)– in order to engage and collaborate, participants will be expected to have their webcams on for the duration of the class
  3. Microphone (Mandatory)
  4. Internet connection– For best results, you will want to ensure you have an internet connection with an upload/download speed of 3-5 Mbps. You can test your internet speed here. The minimum recommended speed is 1.5 Mbps, but anything below 3 Mbps may result in loss of quality or buffering. Ideally hardwired connection versus wireless for stability – connect your computer directly to your router using an ethernet cable, rather than using your home wi-fi.
  5. A quiet space with minimal distractions –The microphone will be engaged for interactive sessions. Please plan to be fully engaged in the class and clear your work schedule just as you would for the in-class program.
