Money Basics for Newcomers (Part I & Part II)

Money Basics for Newcomers (Part I & Part II)

Join this free session from the Credit Counseling Society geared towards newcomers to Canada with tips on how to navigate the Canadian financial system.

Description

Coming to a new country takes courage, strength, and perseverance. It requires individuals and families to learn a new culture, a new government, a new system, possibly a new language, along with a new banking and financial system. The Canadian financial system is complex and oftentimes confusing to navigate. The information available to you can be overwhelming!

However, there’s hope! Credit Counselling Society has created a program that covers everything from opening a bank account, understanding the importance of credit and how to read your own credit report, to information on how to avoid becoming a victim of scams, fraud, and identity theft. This workshop/webinar is jammed packed with information designed to teach and protect you. Here are the details and what you will learn in the Money Basics for Newcomers workshop/webinar:

Part I

  • Open up a bank account and have the proper identification required
  • Identify the differences between banks and credit unions
  • Create and navigate the different types of bank accounts available to you
  • Different ways to build savings
  • The importance of filing your taxes
  • Send money back home using different options

Part II

  • Identify and use different types of credit wisely
  • Learn about interest rates and how this can affect you
  • Check and read your credit report and score
  • Recognize various fraud and scams in Canada
  • Identify and prevent debit card, credit card and identity theft
  • Report fraud to the police, Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre, and credit reporting agencies (Equifax and TransUnion)
  • Trust yourself in the face of scams

This 1 hour workshop/webinar is interactive and fun! We take a “grab and go” approach – grab an idea or two and go try it. All participants will walk away with ideas, resources, and the full curriculum upon request.

Please note: this workshop can be broken into two different workshops to allow for translation and understanding.
