BCH 1 CPD Point
After almost six years as an optional compliance path in B.C., the BC Energy Step Code will be the default for most B.C. buildings as of May 1, 2023 – a 20%-improvement in energy efficiency compared to the previous base building code.
This performance standard requires energy modeling and an air tightness test on all buildings and removes many of the specific requirements for the efficiency of products and equipment. This approach increases flexibility for projects but also requires greater coordination between project teams.
This presentation will provide:
- An overview of new energy efficiency requirements for Part 3 and Part 9 buildings
- An overview of the new Zero Carbon Step Code for local government opt-in
- Considerations for local implementation
More information and resources related to the Energy Step Code are available at www.energystepcode.ca
If you have questions prepared in advance, please email them to Ally Bodnar at firstname.lastname@example.org by April 21, 2023, by no later than 3 PM (PDT).

Computer or laptop
This course will involve on-screen interaction with your instructor and classmates, reading/viewing on-screen content (slides or videos), and interacting via typing with questions or responses. For this reason, cellphones may not be adequate.

Internet connection - For best results, you will want to ensure you have an internet connection with an upload/download speed of 3-5 Mbps. You can test your internet speed here. Minimum recommended speed is 1.5 Mbps, but anything below 3 Mbps may result in loss of quality or buffering. Ideally hardwired connection versus wireless for stability - connect your computer directly to your router using an ethernet cable, rather than using your home wi-fi.
A quiet space with minimal distractions - microphone will be engaged for interactive sessions. Please plan to be fully engaged in the class and clear your work schedule just as you would for the in-class program.
Who Should Attend
While anyone is welcome to attend, this session would be of benefit to builders, developers, and energy advisors/modellers.
